Low Intensity PEMF vs. High Intensity PEMF: Comparison of Resonant and Impulse Devices

Wellness professionals who use biohacking technology grow accustomed to the ever-evolving question, “How does this technology compare to that?” Often, customers want to know how Pulse PEMF compares to low intensity PEMF such as low intensity beds, mats, and other (typically small, portable) devices.

Measuring the Intensity of PEMF

PEMF is a unique modality that intertwines two natural forces and applies them to the body at the cellular level. PEMF combines electricity, measured in voltage, and magnetic induction, measured in Gauss. In general, Gauss determines the “intensity” of a device, with low intensity PEMF at less than 1,000 Gauss and high intensity PEMF from 1,000 to 50,000 Gauss.

Gauss informs the depth at which the electromagnetic field penetrates the body, but it is not a measure of the effectiveness. The ability of PEMF to stimulate and exercise the cells comes from the fast rise time of the impulse. This explains why MRI machines, despite outputs of 2,000 to 70,000 Gauss, do not stimulate the body.

Delivery of the Magnetic Field

Low and High Intensity devices also differ in their methods of creating and delivering the magnetic field. Low Intensity devices are resonant systems, and High Intensity devices are impulse systems. Resonant systems deliver a magnetic field through repeated waveforms, while impulse systems do so through impulses.

Low Intensity PEMF

Typically computer regulated, Low Intensity resonant PEMF devices produce a repeating waveform for extended periods of time. Generally, waveforms come in the shape of sine, square, or saw tooth. These devices bring the cells into resonance with the repeating wave signal for temporary results.

High Intensity PEMF

A sudden release of energy powers impulse devices to create the magnetic field. After the initial impulse, the energy has reached its peak and its power completely diminishes before repeating. The initial field produced is stronger than a resonant device. However, its peak lasts for a fraction of a second. This impulse effectively strikes, much like a bell, causing the cells to ring out at their own frequency.

Client Experience

Low Intensity PEMF users report experiences that range from no tangible feeling to a light, warm or tingling sensation. This is in stark contrast to the experiences of High Intensity PEMF users, who describe a highly palpable experience. Depending on the settings and the individual, PEMF may be soothing and massage-like or energizing and invigorating. High Intensity PEMF users also report “hotspots.” These could be areas that respond visibly with muscle contractions or are simply more sensitive to the pulse. These are understood by Pulse Professionals to demonstrate the body’s process of drawing the energy where it’s needed most.

High and Low Intensity PEMF for Wellness

Many people have experienced the benefits of both High Intensity PEMF and Low Intensity PEMF. The modalities can be used in conjunction, keeping in mind that using them simultaneously may result in interferences. At Pulse PEMF, we recommend experiencing the technology for yourself and letting that guide your decision!
